Mind you, these are NOT "Earthships"® (a copyrighted name enforced by Michael Reynolds), but rammed-earth tire-structures (generic), as seen in the book "Earthship" (public domain), but with an emphasis on significant modifications to improve their function and form added by the author and just some plain old common sense, while enhancing the client's vision of their future home and facilitating advised-client designs. Also, see the text; "Helpful Hints for the Tire-House Builder" by Michael Shealy, a personal owner/builder/designer's perspective. It includes tips and insights into building a residence using rammed-earth tire-walls as structural elements of residence construction. These insights acquired by the author during the process of building ours (plus 25 years experience as an Aerospace Engineer), designing and being involved in the planning and/or construction of numerous other tire-houses, since 1991. Some of these "hints" are applicable exclusively to Colorado-built homes, but most are good for anywhere in the U.S. Always check your local building requirements first. My design and construction experience helps you build your tire-house. I'm available for consulting on your project by e-mail, or in person at your site. If you have questions, please read my FAQ page first. E-mail me for my hourly rates and drawing estimates. An average sized tire-house will remove 2,000 tires from the ever growing PILE. Beyond that, an efficient passive-solar design will save billions of BTU's and millions of kilowatt hours NOT created with hydrocarbon fuel, in it's lifetime.
